Last night, three dear friends and I ventured to the local friendly sex shop for wine, chocolate, and sex toys–a prelude to Valentine’s Day, I suppose
.
Self Serve is a female-owned, sex-worker-friendly establishment that takes the skulking fear right out of the shopper. Owners Molly and Matie stock the shelves with dildos, vibes, floggers, harnesses, massage oils, magnets and buttons, books, DVDs, and more … There’s even a section on fertility, parenthood, and adolescence–much-appreciated by this kinky, sex-positive mom!
My friends and I sampled the wine, the chocolate, and the audience. The store was full of lively, fun, friendly people ready to share a sexy laugh and clink plastic cups.
We talked to the owners and one staff member about my group, New Mexico FetLifers, and about PEP ladies putting together some classes. As I left, owner Matie stood outside with my for a moment and asked about what PEP provides and how she should refer to us.
“I like the term ‘sex worker,’” I told her.
“Me too!” She put her hand to her heart. “I consider myself a sex worker. After all, we’re in the biz. Our parents treat us differently. Our families talk about us.”
How refreshing! Solidarity between varied facets of the adult industry is critical to our success in gaining legal and social progress. Many company owners count themselves out of being “sex workers,” and in only as “business persons.” We are all, in my estimation, both.
Last night was, and should be, the beginning of a wonderfully fruitful relationship. Bringing PEP and Self Serve to the same table, along with (I hope)
the burgeoning NMFL, is a dream that can only lead to bigger and better sex-positive energy here in the desert.
